Bachelor’s or master’s thesis

12 tips for writing a bachelor’s or master’s thesis

Writing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree can be a difficult task at first glance. To manage your work without stress and unnecessary nervousness, take a look at our 12 tips.

  1. Select the appropriate topic
Choose a suitable and interesting topic for which you will be able to provide the necessary information in sufficient quantity and will also entertain you. Keep in mind that if you are really interested in the topic, the work will go hand in hand and you won’t worry about it.

We do not recommend to run unnecessarily on topics that may be interesting, but have the potential to become a huge bite for you. Choose a theme from the topics for your field already designed or thematically suited to the field of study.

  1. List of used literature
To write the bachelor’s or master’s thesis, it will be necessary to draw on the literature that is related to the topic you are working on. In addition to the literature itself, it is also possible to use professional articles, studies or Internet resources.

The sources used need to be specified in a certain format, while the most commonly used standard, according to which resources need to be stated, is ISO 690 (01 0197) valid from April 1, 2011.

The list of used literature is sorted alphabetically by the author’s surname. For Internet sources, this link should not be highlighted in blue (as a hyperlink).

However, the method of processing the resources used can also be mentioned in the Directive, respectively. in the guidelines for your school’s final theses, then it is important to follow these guidelines. For this reason, we recommend that you first determine the requirements for the cited sources, respectively. bibliographic citations. Each school can take a different form, as well as other requirements on how to cite the sources.

The list of used literature or resources is inserted at the very end of the work and can be broken down, for example, into the literature used, Internet resources, articles and studies, legislation, other resources, etc.

Our tip: Control and proofreading of bibliographic citations is part of our services. We will be happy to assist you and review and correct your bibliography and sources for you.

Quotes in the text

• Harvard system (form name-date) – in the text the cited sources are given in the form of the surname of the author (s), we use round brackets for the year and possibly the page, if it is a direct quotation.

• Footnotes – we use the index after the text where we want to insert the citation. This style of citations uses the function in MS Word: the Reference tab → Insert a footnote → a so-called “superscript” is created. Beware, you never really have a footnote quote!

• Numerical references – the serial number of the citation and, if applicable, the page from which it was quoted (eg [1, p. 33] or (1, p. 33), or just.

The chosen type of citation needs to be unified and only one method used in the whole work. In general, however, your work should not contain more than 10% of direct citations. As a quotation equivalent, paraphrasing or indirect quotations can be used, which means that you overwrite the selected text with your own words, but the meaning remains the same.

We recommend that you first identify the requirements for the cited sources in the text. Each school may have a different form, as well as other requirements, of how the cited sources are cited. You need to be careful about quotes, if the source of the quotation is not properly listed, the whole work can be considered as plagiarism.

Our tip: If you want to be sure that you have quotes in the text and will meet the requirements of your school at the same time, order a proofreading quote in our text. We will be happy to assist you and review and correct all citations in the text for you.

Grammar and stylistics

Of course, the final thesis, whether it be a bachelor’s or a diploma thesis, should of course be entirely correct in terms of grammar and stylistics. A text editor will help you with automatic text correction. It will show you words that lack a letter or a grammatical error.

Always typing grammatically and avoiding unwritten expressions. Text and grammar is important and creates an overall impression of work.

Our tip: If you are not entirely sure whether your work meets all your requirements in terms of grammatical and stylistic aspects, but it is extensive work and it is not always possible to detect a mistake or typo, we recommend that you submit your work to proofreading. It is certainly good if someone else looks at your work before handing it over and finds any errors you missed and warns you about them. If you want to be sure that you have the right grammar and stylistics in your work, order this service from us. We will be happy to help you and check and fix everything in your work for you.

Formal adjustment of work

Of course, another important aspect of the thesis is its proper formatting and overall formal text editing. You should always follow the rules that are set for final student work. The rules are usually determined by the school itself, so it is advisable to find out specific requirements for the final thesis before starting the writing. It is ideal if there is such an opportunity to look at some of the work of your school students and then inspire them.

Our tip: Knowledge of a text editor in which to write your work is very important in this case. Knowledge of MS Word, for example, can make your writing quite easy. However, if you do not know how to format, you can use the services of companies that specialize in formatting the text of the final student works. This will ensure that your work is professionally processed. Of course we are here for you. We have been working on formatting work for many years and we will be happy to help you with it.

Annotation / abstract / resume and keywords

Annotation or abstract is usually written in the introductory pages of the thesis. It briefly describes what the work will be about and introduces the reader to the topic that the thesis deals with. Undoubtedly this is one of the very important parts of the work itself, so we recommend paying attention to it.

Of course, the abstract or abstract is written in English. Why? Also in the case of student work, it is envisaged that they will be included in a professional database where they will be easily traceable based on keywords in English. Keywords should also appear here, although this is not necessarily a condition.

If your work is of a more professional nature and you do not know how to translate it into English, please contact a translator who will easily translate the text of a few sentences (more of an abstract or annotation). In this case, we strongly advise against using compilers available on the Internet.

Our tip: Don’t add unnecessary worries and entrust the text of your annotation / abstract / resume to us and we will translate it to you.

Regular backup

The final works are always comprehensive in several dozen pages, so you should back up and save your work continuously, even during writing. You will certainly not write the job in a single evening, so always save it carefully on your computer and save at least one copy on a flash drive or other portable media for sure. Technique can betray us easily and utterly unexpectedly, so it would be a pity for a technical problem to lose all the work we have done so far and start writing work again. Be sure not to underestimate the regular backup of your text.

Make a plan and customize your environment

The environment itself and the timetable for writing the final thesis is often a neglected but rather important element. Do not leave your writing at the last minute and write it down as soon as possible. This avoids the stress you may have during writing. For the sake of clarity and overall idea, we recommend that you create a timetable for what you will focus on. Even if you only have to write one or two sentences at a given time, do it. You will see how this will help you.

Also, the environment in which you work is important. If you want to have peace of mind, find a place where no one can disturb you and where you can concentrate fully. On the contrary, some individuals prefer busier places such as cafes. You can also see a lot of students working here. A thousand people, a thousand tastes. Therefore, when writing do not look at the habits of others and find a place that will be your energy in favor of your work.

Take regular breaks while you relax and have a rest. Lots of thoughts will spread over you at this time and you will come back to work with a clear head and often clearer concept than if you were writing nonstop.

  1. Focus on quality introduction and conclusion of the work
Introduction and conclusion are the alpha and omega of your entire work. We know from our experience that sometimes the expert committee or opponent does not have enough time to completely read your entire work and thus the two parts of the work become the subject parts of the assessed whole. It is definitely advisable not to underestimate these passages and to care about them.

In the introduction you need to familiarize the reader with the topic and with what and how you want to work at work. You can also mention the reason why you are dealing with the topic, but never include the specific results or methods you intend to use for your research.

On the contrary, the reader should tell the reader what you have achieved with your research and what new findings you bring. Therefore, both should be of good quality and sophisticated to perfectly reflect the content of the work. Finally, please indicate whether you have reached the desired goal.

Consult with experts

Always consult your work with experts. It is important to choose a suitable supervisor, who will work with you well and keep you informed of shortcomings.

Similarly, if you have someone in your area who already has his / her own experience with a bachelor’s or master’s thesis, consult him and listen to his / her own knowledge and insights. In this way, you can easily get more inspiration and find out what the reader is, who will surely enrich your own.

If you do not have too much experience or time, it is certainly advisable to turn to professionals in the final check of work. On the contrary, their experience is rich and can help you fundamentally and professionally with proofreading or with a formal adjustment of the whole work. Count on paying for these services, but as a result, it’s a great investment that pays off. Unnecessary worries are eliminated and you can use the saved time to improve the quality of your work.

Our tip: Formatting, grammatical and stylistic proofing is part of our service. We will gladly help you and format your work and fix it for you.

What to avoid

Definitely plagiarism. Copied or literally transcribed passages or even entire works are a major problem for the final theses. If you find suitable text or professional work, reformulate the passages with your words or quote the text, followed by the author or publication. The citations themselves should not be missing in the text, so do not postpone them at the last moment, work with them continuously. We certainly do not recommend trying to include citations in the final stage in the final stage, as continuity, duplication of ideas, etc. may be impaired.

Articles or texts that you will use as a basis for your work should not be older than 10 years, with some exceptions that are specific to the topic, and some topics are more likely to draw on more up-to-date publications that contain the latest information.

Definitely try not to postpone “for later” work. Give your work enough time and try to avoid a situation where you can save what you can at the last minute. Teachers already have a lot of work experience and related student behavior. So, to make a point at the introduction, the conclusion, the others to “slip” and then to believe and hope that you will be lucky and no one will look more at work, is really short-sighted. Do not underestimate the schedule, you will not really write quality work overnight.

Printing and binding work

Once the job is done, you are satisfied with its content and you have the green light from your supervisor, you can put the job in print. Carefully select the font and color of the boards, in some cases the school sets its own requirements, so it is certainly appropriate to find out these.
